Print Audit’s quest to organize a new conference in this mature printing and imaging industry defies logic at first. Attendance at industry conferences is way down from ten years ago. The number of conferences held during the calendar year are down as well. What’s behind this bold (or maybe naïve) attempt to add a high caliber conference to a mature industry that, at times, just seems burned out on conferences as a whole? Have the folks at Print Audit been playing too much Prince on their iPods?

Another stage, power point, round table, expert panel and cast of hundreds looking to commune and see the “new MPS” …again. I’ve witnessed multiple iterations and others broken promises since 2007. I’ve attended many such gatherings and presentations: Lyra, Photizo, ITEX, ReCharger, MWAi Executive Summit. I’ve spoken with thousands of customers, hundreds of resellers all the OEMs and countless dealers about MpS, copiers, printers, toner, managed services and the like.

So, why does the sales process always seem to come down to price? No matter how low you go, no matter how fine you cut your margin there will always be a competitor who is willing to steal the deal with an even lower price or narrower margin. If not now, then surely when the customer is ready to buy again. Live by price, die by that same sword.

Why did I join Print Audit? I left the world of MPS software quite a few years ago because I felt (and still feel) that simply providing device monitoring software and toner alerts was no longer enough. The space had become inundated with MPS providers who essentially just changed how customers were being billed: CPP vs. buying a cartridge. I knew there was a better way, that the “race to the bottom” was our own doing, that if we did a good job of assessing what was actually going on at a customer location we would have a much better chance of earning their business. After all these years of doing Assessments I can say, with confidence, that I was correct.
