Printer Reliability and the True Cost To Your Managed Print Offering

One thing we know for certain: Margins for managed print, especially programs that employ Cost Per Page billing, are under attack. We could just increase the Cost Per Page price, right? Yeah…

If we can’t increase pricing we have to become as cost-effective as possible. As an office equipment dealer, you might be pulling your hair out trying to come up with ways to ensure you’re doing all you can to keep costs down.

One of the most expensive components of any Cost Per Page offering is labor. People just aren’t getting any cheaper, and nor should they - they are important assets for our services offering. So how can we use those valuable resources most efficiently? One way is to ensure that the devices you are managing are as reliable as possible. The fewer service calls you have to do, the more cost-effective the service component of your offering will be.

How is a person to know which devices are the most reliable or the least? The good news is that Print Audit is actively working on its Device Reliability Dashboard. We get critical error information on millions of devices and have figured out ways to use that data to help dealers understand which devices are the most reliable.

The dashboard contains the data from:

  • Over 1,500,000 devices.
  • More than 2,700 printer models.
  • 304 billion pages.

We’ve compiled and analysed the data for all these devices for the 2014 through 2018 time frame. Some of the key elements of the dashboard:

Top 10 Most Reliable Printers: How does a device make this list? By having the lowest critical errors per 1,000 pages! Of all the devices we’ve tracked since 2014 to 2018, the average device errors/1K pages is 0.24036. The top 10 reliable devices have 0.00009 or less.

Top 10 Least Reliable Printers: Nobody wants to be on this list. They average 11 to 35 critical errors for every 1,000 pages.

Top 10 Reliable Manufacturers: This list details the most reliable manufacturer by having the highest number of reliable devices.

Top 10 Least Reliable Manufacturers: Again, looking at the manufacturer with the highest number of devices with low reliability ratings.

As an office equipment dealer, you likely have some numbers of your own from years of experience. We’d love to hear from you and see what you’ve found by actively servicing the print infrastructure of your customers.

Who will get access to this treasure trove of actionable intelligence? Print Audit Premier Members of course! Print Audit will also be offering it as a subscription service. At Print Audit, we continue to do more to ensure that they get an edge above their competitors. Understanding which devices are most reliable can have a dramatic impact on lowering the costs of running a managed print program and give you valuable dollars back to your bottom line.
