If you’re in sales or if you’re a business owner then you know that year-end is a time of year for mixed feelings. On one hand you are excited to spend well earned time relaxing with family and friends. On the other hand you have a boat load of deals yet to close and the stress levels are off the charts! One minute you are feeling excited for the holidays and the next you are dripping with sweat wondering how on earth you’re going to close out the sales-year on a high note. What’s a sales rep or business owner to do?
For starters, remember that you’ve been here before. Unless it’s your first year in sales, you’ve had plenty of years of the year-end panic attacks to realize that you’ve continued to get through it. In fact, you’ve likely continued to excel. If it is your first year in sales, WOW! You’re in for one heck of a ride and I can’t wait to talk to you in another 3 years to see if you made it through the gauntlet, to see if you’re living the dream or if you’ve moved onto a less stressful (and maybe less rewarding) career.
I’ve been in sales and business development for my entire professional life. Year-end is one of my favorite times of year. In fact, I’d say “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” (imagine this to the tune of Andy Williams.) If you’re in sales it should be for you too! Here are the top 5 reasons that I love year-end so much:
1. I get to take inventory of all the good stuff: In my sales and business development career I’ve had the opportunity to do some pretty cool things. Each year I get to add to that list, and if you stop to think of it, so do you too! Remember that as stressful as year-end can be that you deserve to take pride in the good things you’ve done all year. My proudest accomplishment this year would have to be seeing some of my dealer partners selling and winning with Seat Based Billing (SBB) for Managed Print. I take a lot of pride in seeing my partners succeed.
2. I get to brainstorm with some awesome people: Year-end isn’t just about closing the last few deals. It’s about working with your colleagues to start planning and looking forward to the year ahead. Your expertise gets an opportunity to shine and the time spent with other smart people helps you to fine tune your ideas and learn some new ones. At Print Audit I feel pretty lucky to work with some incredible people and this is the time of year when we do our strategic planning as well as spend time with our world-wide team. Amazing experience, every year, to say the least.
3. I get to put the pedal to the metal: I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a stress junky. I perform best when there’s enough pressure to keep me nimble. If you’re in sales you’re probably the same. Can year-end be stressful? You bet! Would you have it any other way? I doubt it. I’ve written about the importance of stress and its importance in developing excellence. If you’ve made a career out of sales or business you know what I’m talking about. Harness that energy and turn it into something awesome.
4. I get to look forward to a great new year: At Print Audit we’ve been growing like crazy! We are blessed with more Premier members and channel partners than ever in our history. Our global distribution arms continue to dominate their markets. We continue working our tails off on our promise of “Saving the office equipment channel” by providing powerful print management, business intelligence and document management tools that go far beyond the printed page. We’ll be posting a blog in December with all the exciting details of yet another year of pure awesome.
